"Next!" The word echoed in the empty audition room, and Ben’s stomach lurched. He took a deep breath, trying to steady his shaking hands. The other contenders had already gone, their successes and failures hanging in the air like an invisible fog. He had spent weeks preparing, memorizing lines, crafting his performance. He imagined the applause, the accolades, the triumphant feeling of achieving his dream.

The director’s face was unreadable as he delivered the verdict. "Ben, thank you for your audition. Unfortunately, we're going in a different direction. You haven't got the part."

Ben felt a sudden emptiness, a hollow ache where excitement had been. He mumbled a thank you, his voice barely a whisper. He wanted to scream, to rant, to throw something, anything. He clenched his fists, forcing himself to smile weakly as he exited the room, and the silence seemed to grow deafening.
