David slammed the file cabinet shut, the metal door banging with unnecessary force. He felt the heat rise in his face as he paced his small cubicle, the confined space suddenly feeling claustrophobic. He’d seen the email. The official company document outlining salaries. He hadn't been imagining it. Emily, the recent graduate, was earning a higher base pay.

He raked a hand through his hair, mussing it. The edges of the paper cut into his fingers. How? He’d mentored Emily. He’d trained her. He'd put in the extra hours, day after day, year after year. The injustice of it all was almost unbearable.

He grabbed his jacket, shrugging it on with a jerky motion. He was leaving. He needed some air. He needed to clear his head, and he wouldn't get it from staying in this cramped space.
