Eliza’s jaw was clenched so tight, it ached. She felt a sharp pain in her temple. She had heard the news in the elevator, a seemingly innocent discussion between two junior colleagues. They were discussing their new salary. Higher than hers. It felt like someone had kicked her in the gut.

She’d thought she was doing well. She had consistently exceeded expectations. She had taken on extra projects. She had always been a team player. Was it not enough? She felt a sudden wave of exhaustion wash over her.

She slumped in her chair, staring at the empty screen, the familiar weight of the situation pressing down on her. She felt a profound sense of weariness, as though all the fight had been taken out of her.
