Gemotions

The humid air of the yard sale pressed against Sarah's skin, making her feel itchy. She ran a hand through her hair, already regretting agreeing to come. Her husband, Mark, was chatting with a neighbor, oblivious to the way her stomach was churning. She wandered aimlessly, feigning interest in chipped teacups and dusty board games. Then, tucked beneath a pile of mismatched pillows, she saw it.

It was a worn, familiar shape. A brown teddy bear, missing one button eye and with a patched-up ear. Her childhood bear, Barnaby. A wave of dizziness washed over her. She picked it up, her fingers tracing the faded fur. A sharp intake of breath. The woman running the sale, a cheerful, older lady, looked up and smiled. "Find something you like, dear?"

Sarah found herself unable to speak, her throat suddenly constricted. She just nodded, clutching Barnaby to her chest. The price tag read, "50 cents."
