Rain lashed against the windows as Amelia reached for the mail. She snatched the small stack, her fingers icy despite the gloves she wore. Her shoulders were bunched, a permanent knot she couldn’t seem to work loose. A single white envelope, devoid of any return address, caught her eye. Inside, a card with a generic "Happy Birthday" greeting. A little shiver ran down her spine. Someone knew. Knew what, exactly, she wasn't sure, but the anonymity of the sender set her teeth on edge. She crumpled the card, then smoothed it out, a nervous habit she’d picked up lately.
