The new house felt like a prison. Liam stood in the entryway, a prickling sensation crawling over his skin. Each room felt like a judgment, each corner a hidden threat. He had to be strong, show no weakness. He needed to find something to give him the upper hand.

He began with the basement, a damp, cavernous space that amplified every sound. The air hung heavy, stagnant. He moved slowly, methodically, inspecting the pipes, the electrical panel. His fingers, twitching almost uncontrollably, ran along the concrete walls.

He reached the far corner, near the water heater. The wall seemed solid, but something about the angle, the slight discoloration, drew his attention. He pushed against the paneling, expecting resistance. Instead, it gave way, revealing a narrow passageway. His jaw clenched. He wasn't sure if he should go, but the thought of staying still was worse.
