Gemotions

The last box had been hauled inside, and Emily stood alone in the hallway, suddenly swamped by a wave of apprehension. The house, all polished wood and gleaming fixtures, seemed to be holding its breath, waiting. A knot twisted tight in her stomach. She needed to do something, anything, to break the spell.

She began to pace, her steps quick and erratic, her eyes darting from room to room. In the study, she ran her hand along the bookshelf, testing the spines of the books. A section felt different, subtly recessed. She pressed against it, and a hidden panel swung inward.

She stepped back, her hand flying to her chest. Her heart was a trapped bird. She stared into the darkness, a primal fear seizing her.
