The silence of the house was crushing. The echoes of the footsteps, the creaks of the floorboards, were all amplified in the stillness. A nervous twitch danced in Maya's left eye. The weight of the world felt like it was resting on her shoulders. She wanted to feel the security she had hoped the house would bring.

She started in the master bedroom, trying to find a point of stability. Her fingers traced the molding around the window, searching for a flaw. The wood felt smooth, flawless. But in the corner, where the wall met the ceiling, she found a slight irregularity. She pressed it, and a section of the wall popped open.

A small, dark space. Her breath hitched. She had to know what was in there.
