He’d almost missed the invitation, thinking it was junk mail. Then he saw the familiar logo, the familiar school crest. Mark’s palms began to sweat. He had a sudden urge to shred the thing, to obliterate the reminder of a life he wasn’t sure he wanted to revisit.

He sat back in his chair, his body rigid. The air in his office felt too thick, too heavy to breathe. He reached for a glass of water, downing it in one swift gulp, his throat working.

The very thought of seeing them all again sent a shiver down his spine. The pressure of it was almost unbearable. He ran a hand over his face.
