He paced the empty rooms, each step echoing in the cavernous space. His jaw was locked, and his mouth was dry. Sunlight streamed through the dusty windows, illuminating the ghosts of his past.

He ran his hand along the peeling wallpaper in the hallway, remembering the countless games of hide-and-seek. He could almost hear his father's booming laughter, his mother’s gentle scolding.

His breathing grew shallower. He found himself squeezing his eyes shut, trying to fight the overwhelming emotions.
