Coach Miller rubbed a hand across his forehead, the fluorescent lights of the gymnasium buzzing overhead. The clipboard felt heavy in his grasp. He focused on the scuffed wood floor, tracing the faded lines with his eyes. This was the hardest part. He’d seen a lot of kids come and go.

He could hear the rhythmic squeak of sneakers and the sporadic shouts of the players during practice. He needed to get it over with. It felt like a weight crushing his chest. He took a deep breath, trying to steady his breathing.

He called for a time out. The players, buzzing with excitement, trotted over to him. He scanned the faces, trying to ignore the way his stomach lurched. He knew who he had to tell. He motioned for Sarah to come closer.
