A bead of sweat trickled down David’s temple as he stared at the photographs scattered across his kitchen table. His hands were clasped so tightly his knuckles were white. He had promised himself he wouldn't do this. He had promised his mother he wouldn’t look. But the curiosity had gnawed at him.

He picked up a photo of his father, the celebrated doctor, posing beside a sleek, expensive car. His father had always spoken of hardship, of working his way up from nothing. But this image… This image screamed of a different narrative, one of privilege and pretense. A chill ran through him despite the warmth of the room. He felt an urge to run, to escape the mounting weight.

His jaw clenched. He felt a sudden, fierce urge to shatter the carefully constructed reality he had always known. The world around him seemed to blur, and his vision was limited. He pushed himself to his feet, pacing the small space.
