The elevator doors chimed, opening onto the seventh floor. Liam had just learned that he was being let go, and he didn't know how to tell his wife. He was trying to text his best friend, Ben, "I'm screwed," hoping to have someone to talk to, but his thumb slipped. The text went to his boss, Mr. Evans.

He felt a lurch in his stomach. He was already reeling from the dismissal, and this felt like a punch to the gut. He imagined Mr. Evans’s reaction - smug and vindictive. He pictured his reputation ruined. His vision swam. He stumbled, leaning against the elevator wall, fighting the urge to vomit. He felt a heavy weight pressing down on his chest.
