"Anything new?" he asked quietly, the question directed towards the woman at the front desk. She shook her head. He had been checking hourly since the morning started.

He had chewed his nails down to the quicks, a habit he hadn't indulged in years. The air in his office felt stifling. He had opened the window and had been regretting it ever since.

He drummed his fingers on his desk, a staccato rhythm that echoed the pounding in his head. This was his chance, the moment he had worked towards for so long. He had to be calm. He stared at the pictures of his children on his desk, his jaw locked.
