“Unbelievable,” James hissed, his voice barely audible. He gripped the letter so tightly, it began to crinkle in his hand. The words swam before his eyes. The apology, offered so many years later, felt like a deliberate act of cruelty. His shoulders felt tight, as if he were carrying a great burden.

He slammed his fist on the table, the impact making the tea cup tremble. He got up abruptly, his movements stiff and jerky. He went to the window, pushing it open to let in the cool air, but the gesture offered little relief. His jaw muscles clenched, and he began a slow, deliberate massage.
