The dog pulled at the leash, eager to sniff the familiar trails. But Liam barely registered it. His eyes were fixed ahead, his focus singular. He felt a constant pressure behind his eyes, a dull ache that wouldn't subside.

He stopped abruptly, the leash snapping taut. The familiar spot, usually shaded and comforting, now offered only barren ground. His throat tightened, making it hard to swallow.

He knelt, running his fingers over the rough, cut surface. The wood was cold, lifeless. He felt a surge of pure, unadulterated anger. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to control the turmoil that threatened to erupt.
