The news had hit Brian like a physical blow. The report detailed an event, and the location. It was the same house. His house. He felt a dull ache in his temples, a pressure that was building. He walked into the living room, hands shoved in pockets, pacing the perimeter.

He stopped, staring at the fireplace. It suddenly seemed ominous, a black void. He remembered the realtor's words, "Cozy, charming." He scoffed to himself. He needed to get away from the house.

He went to the front door, pausing with his hand on the knob. The doorknob felt cold, unyielding. He could barely breathe. He wasn't sure if he could bring himself to walk out.

He backed away and went to the back door instead.
