The small apartment felt like a prison cell. Jake stared at the photograph, his jaw clenched, the image of a smiling stranger staring back at him. The letter had brought the hammer down. A half-brother. His father, a man he barely knew, had kept a secret that had thrown Jake's world into disarray.

He felt a nervous energy bubbling in his veins. He ran a hand through his hair, over and over again. Every shadow in the room seemed to flicker and dance. He'd never felt like this before. He grabbed a beer from the fridge, the cold metal a small comfort against his trembling hand.

Jake paced the small space, unable to sit still. He felt like he wanted to break something.
