The Principal's words echoed in her mind: “Improve the scores, or else.” Ms. Evans stared at the stack of ungraded papers, each one a testament to the students’ struggles, and, in a way, her own. A headache was hammering at her temples, threatening to split her skull. She scrubbed at her eyes, feeling the familiar sting of exhaustion. The room was a mess, with papers scattered and books haphazardly piled.

A large, awkwardly wrapped package sat near the door. It was from Daniel, a student who had dropped out of school and she had tried to bring back. Inside was a framed painting, a vibrant abstract piece filled with color and movement. He'd written a note saying it was a reminder to not give up on the kids, nor herself.
