The drive back to her parents’ house felt interminable. Each mile passed with a fresh wave of panic rising in her chest. The radio played upbeat music, a cruel irony that grated on her nerves. She kept adjusting the rearview mirror, checking for imaginary pursuers.

She gripped the steering wheel so tightly her fingers ached. She felt a cold sweat prickling at her forehead. She knew she’d have to break the news to her parents, face their disappointment, their concern.

She pulled into the driveway, the house looming large and ominous. She took a deep breath, trying to gather her composure. It was going to be the longest evening of her life.
