The car ride was a silent torment. The endless highway blurred past, each mile stretching the already taut muscles in Amelia’s shoulders. She kept adjusting the rearview mirror, checking for… danger? She couldn't say. Just a feeling, a deep-seated unease that clung to her like a second skin.

At the clinic, she felt exposed. She felt the scrutiny of the medical staff. She could feel the stares. She noticed a man in the waiting room watching her. His eyes were wide, and his lip twitched. She had seen him looking at her before.

As she turned to leave, the man approached her, his face a mask of worry. "Wait," he called out, his voice a strained croak. "About… your results… Did they tell you?"

Amelia closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She already knew the answer.

"It's like… you're always on edge," he explained, as if reading her mind. "Always."
