Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the frantic drumming in Amelia's chest. She’d found the manuscript tucked under the mattress, a yellowed and dog-eared document. The title, "The Ballad of Amelia Grey," sent a shiver down her spine. Now, seated in her favorite armchair, she gripped the worn leather, knuckles white, the soft fabric doing little to soothe the tremor in her hands. Each chapter unfolded a version of her life, thinly veiled, yet exposing vulnerabilities she’d only confessed to Michael, her partner of seven years.

She reread the passage describing their first date, the hesitant glances, the shared laughter. It felt like a betrayal. His words, once filled with adoration, now seemed to dissect her, analyze her. A wave of nausea hit her, and she reached for the water glass on the side table, her throat suddenly dry. The icy water did little to abate the disquiet that had taken root within.
