"Are you even listening, David?" Clara's voice pierced the silence, laden with an edge she rarely displayed. The discovery – a hardback book, concealed amongst his collection – had left a bitter taste in her mouth. She'd caught the title first, "Clara Unveiled," and her heart had done a strange, erratic flutter.

He sat on the edge of the bed, his back rigid. Her gaze darted from his averted eyes to the book, the words mocking her from the cover. The room seemed to shrink around her, the familiar furniture taking on an alien quality. She felt a prickling sensation on her skin, as if every pore was suddenly aware of his scrutiny.
