He glared at the landlord as he left. He could feel his face flush, and heat rising up his neck. His hands were clenched so tightly at his sides. He marched down the hall, each step heavier than the last.

The news felt like a betrayal. He’d meticulously crafted this apartment into a space that represented him. All the effort, the planning, everything felt threatened.

He reached his door, fumbling for his keys. Once inside, he slammed the door shut, the sound echoing through the empty apartment. He slumped against it, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He pressed his palms against his eyes.
