The U-Haul rattled, each pothole a hammer blow against Amelia’s already fractured composure. She clenched the steering wheel so hard her knuckles were white, the landscape of her childhood home blurring through unshed tears. This wasn't how it was supposed to be. Not at thirty-two, with a degree and a career that, until recently, seemed promising.

Her mom, ever the optimist, would be waiting with a casserole. Amelia imagined the forced cheer in her voice, the carefully concealed pity. A wave of nausea rolled through her, a phantom limb of her failed independence. This was a prison of well-meaning intentions, a gilded cage she'd crafted for herself.

She parked, engine sputtering its final protest. Her feet felt leaden as she climbed out, each footfall a monumental effort. The house loomed, a monument to a past she couldn't outrun, a future she couldn't face.
