“Now, about this crucial client….” He trailed off, his voice catching in his throat. He glanced at the document, the words blurring before his eyes. His skin prickled with a cold sensation that spread from his fingertips to his toes.

He kept glancing out the window. The world outside seemed so bright, so full of possibilities. He felt trapped, tethered to this desk, this chair, this job he was soon to lose. He fought back the urge to flee.

He watched the new recruit, his replacement, making notes. His breath hitched as the other man spoke, offering a casual suggestion. He saw his own job, his own existence, being erased right before his eyes.
