The email sat in her inbox, a malevolent little square of white against the morning light. Her hands shook as she clicked it open. The subject line, “Academic Integrity Violation,” seemed to scream. A cold knot twisted in her stomach, making it hard to breathe. Her vision swam, the words of the accusation blurring into an indistinguishable mass. She scrolled, her fingers clumsy on the trackpad, searching for a way out, a loophole, anything that would negate the crushing dread that was consuming her.

She rose from her desk, the chair scraping loudly against the floor. The sound echoed in the sudden quiet of her room. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence.
