The news had been on, but now it was time for work. The car was usually parked right outside. As James opened the door, he looked out. A black hole in his driveway. His mouth went dry.

He gripped the doorframe, his knuckles white. The world around him seemed to shrink, closing in. He felt a sudden, desperate urge to flee, to escape the crushing weight of the unknown.

He took a shaky breath, trying to steady himself. His heart thundered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of pure panic. He couldn’t think. He felt like his lungs had stopped working.
