The office building, usually a place of familiarity, felt menacing. The elevator music, a cheerful tune, grated on his nerves. He found himself avoiding Sarah, the junior colleague whose salary was now a festering wound. He couldn’t bring himself to look at her, to speak to her. It was too much. The injustice of it all, the blatant disparity, left him feeling hollowed out.
