The elevator doors opened, and he was met by a barrage of noise and activity. Normally, he would have greeted the office with a smile, but today he felt a cold dread wrapping around his heart. The information, a casual remark over lunch, had stripped away his composure. His breath hitched in his throat.

He attempted to appear normal, to go through the motions of his routine. But every conversation felt forced, every smile strained. He felt a constant, nagging discomfort, a prickling sensation on his skin.
