He had been working late, she knew. However, the light spilling from the home office was different, brighter. She paused before entering, the feeling like stepping into a cold bath.

Inside, she saw him on a video call, talking. His words, in her language, were precise, smooth. He was laughing, animated, with a person she had never seen before.

Her hand drifted to her throat. She needed to get out. The air suddenly seemed very thin. She backed away slowly, as though from a caged animal.
