He gripped the doorknob, knuckles bone-white. The resistance felt like the house itself was fighting him. A shiver, unrelated to the chilly October air, snaked down his back. The floorboards groaned beneath his weight as he slowly pushed.

The air inside was stagnant, heavy with a smell like dust and decay. A single ray of light from the hidden window illuminated a dark form in the corner. His breath hitched in his throat.

"Who's there?" His voice cracked, betraying the turmoil within him. He took a tentative step forward, his legs suddenly leaden. Every muscle felt taut, ready to spring or collapse.
