The dusty attic air felt thick, suffocating. He watched his father lift the old sword from its velvet-lined case. It was the family sword, passed down through generations. The cold steel felt wrong in his father's trembling hands. The sunlight, filtering through the grime-coated window, cast long, distorted shadows, making the room feel menacing. He felt a cold dread creeping through his bones, like icy fingers searching for a weakness.

His father coughed, a dry, hacking sound. "It's time," he rasped, his voice barely a whisper. He knew this moment was coming, of course he did, but the reality of it felt like being plunged into freezing water. He wanted to say something, anything, to stop the inevitable, but his mouth wouldn't obey. He felt the blood drain from his face, leaving him feeling dizzy and lightheaded.
