“I understand,” she said, her voice thin, reedy. The lawyer's words felt like a physical blow. The news had hit her with the force of a tidal wave, leaving her reeling. Her life savings, her time, all the hopes and dreams she'd invested in her product, had been rendered useless.

Her mouth felt dry, her lips cracking. She struggled to keep the tears from spilling over. She fought to maintain her composure.
