He gripped the phone so tightly his knuckles were white. "There must be a mistake," he stammered into the receiver, his voice cracking. David was used to control, to precision. This felt… wrong. Unfair. His world was disintegrating.

The administrator's calm voice droned on, a robotic explanation that offered no solace. He hung up, his hands shaking violently. He paced his tiny apartment, each footstep a frantic, restless beat.

He had to fix this. He had to fight. But the feeling of helplessness, a vast, engulfing blackness, threatened to swallow him whole.
