Gemotions

The tiny, chipped mug nearly slipped from Liam’s grasp as his roommate, Ben, launched into his impassioned plea. Sweat beaded on Liam’s forehead despite the cool evening air. He gripped the mug tighter, knuckles white.

“Think of the companionship, Liam! We’d never be lonely again!” Ben gestured wildly, accidentally knocking over a stack of magazines. Liam flinched, his heart thudding a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

Liam mumbled something about responsibility, his voice barely a whisper. He couldn’t meet Ben’s gaze. The idea of a pet, of something else to care for, to be *responsible* for, sent a cold shiver down his spine. The thought of potential accidents, of sickness, of *loss*, made his stomach clench.

He took a large gulp of his now lukewarm tea, hoping to calm the churning in his gut. The silence hung heavy after Ben’s proposal. He felt trapped, cornered. Escape seemed impossible.
