The realtor’s words, “Perfect for a family pet,” echoed in David’s mind as he stared at the empty apartment. He shifted his weight, trying to find a comfortable position on the uncomfortable sofa. He wished his wife, Emily, wouldn’t be so keen on getting a cat.

Emily was already on her knees, smiling at the thought. The thought of a furry creature rubbing against his legs, constantly demanding attention, had his stomach doing a somersault. He shifted again, a restless energy buzzing through him.

He glanced at the pristine white walls, the clean, uncluttered surfaces. He pictured fur everywhere, chewed furniture, the incessant neediness. He envisioned endless vet visits, expenses… the *finality* of it all. He rubbed his hands together, suddenly cold, despite the warm sunlight streaming through the window.

He cleared his throat, trying to find his voice. What if he messed it up? What if he couldn't cope?
