"It’ll be fun, Chloe!” Jamie’s voice rang with enthusiastic, youthful energy. Chloe forced a smile, though her palms were slick with sweat. The thought of a rambunctious puppy in their already chaotic lives filled her with unease.

She imagined chewed shoes, accidents on the carpet, sleepless nights. The sheer *volume* of work… she pictured it all and felt a wave of nausea. She swallowed, trying to compose herself.

Jamie was already making plans, describing walks, games. Chloe found herself unable to speak. The walls of their cozy living room seemed to be closing in. She felt trapped. The puppy, in her mind's eye, seemed like a tidal wave of responsibility, about to engulf her. She wanted to scream.
