“It’s just… it’s been a long time,” Mark stammered, his voice cracking. Across the table, Alex tilted his head. He looked… confused. Mark felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead. The restaurant, filled with the murmur of conversations and the clinking of silverware, suddenly felt too loud, too close. He wanted to scream, to run. He felt an intense need to hide, to disappear before Alex could see the devastation etched onto his face. The world seemed to shrink around him, the walls closing in.
