He'd recognized the street. He’d recognised the house. But when she opened the door, her eyes showed nothing but polite curiosity. A cold knot formed in Ben's stomach, twisting and churning. He felt a sudden weakness in his legs, a sensation of falling. He swallowed, trying to force the words past the lump in his throat, but his mouth wouldn’t cooperate. He could only stare at her, the woman he had loved, who now looked at him like he was an unsolicited salesman. His breath came in ragged gasps.
