The phone felt heavy in Sarah’s hand. She’d been waiting for this call for months. Now that it had come, bringing news she knew was coming, her throat felt constricted, making it difficult to breathe. The voice on the other end, polite and professional, felt miles away.

"We just don't think it's the right fit for us," the editor had said.

She stared out the window, at the bustling city below, suddenly feeling disconnected from everything. The sounds of traffic and distant sirens were just a meaningless roar. Her vision blurred, and the world seemed to tilt. She felt weak, as if she could simply collapse.

She slowly hung up the phone.
