Charles found it in a dusty box under the stairs, tucked between a collection of old photographs and forgotten trinkets. The paper, a faded cream color, was addressed to his wife, Martha. It was dated just before they were married.

His chest constricted, as if an invisible hand were tightening a vise. He felt the blood drain from his face, leaving him feeling lightheaded. He hesitated, his fingers hovering over the seal. He didn't want to uncover something he wasn't prepared for. His mind raced.

He opened the letter. Each word was a tiny hammer blow against his sanity. It was about another man. The words threatened to choke him.
