The world tilted. Her jaw tightened, and she could feel the blood drain from her face. The message, a veiled threat, had been intended for a rival, but now resided in the phone of a police officer. She slumped against the wall, as if her legs could no longer hold her.

Each beat of her heart echoed in her ears. She imagined the interrogation room, the harsh fluorescent lights, the relentless questions. The air grew heavy, thick with the weight of impending doom. She felt as though she couldn't breathe.
