The chair squeaked loudly as John sat down at his desk. He’d barely touched his breakfast, the toast sat cold and untouched. The air felt heavy, like a suffocating blanket.

He stared at the blinking cursor on his screen, unable to focus. The announcement would come this afternoon. His phone sat on the desk. He hadn't turned it off. He kept glancing at it.
