The paper shook in Amelia's trembling hands. It was a crisp, white rectangle, a stark contrast to the cluttered countertop. Her breath hitched. The eviction notice. She sank into the kitchen chair, the plastic cold against her clammy skin.

Outside, a car backfired, the sharp crack echoing through the open window and making her jump. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to fight the rising panic that threatened to overwhelm her. The world seemed to be closing in, the familiar objects of her kitchen morphing into menacing shapes.
