He announced it casually, as if talking about buying milk, "We're relocating to Denver next month." I felt the blood drain from my face. My body felt leaden, my limbs heavy and sluggish. A cold wave washed over me, and I felt I couldn't breathe.

The room began to spin. The ordinary surroundings transformed into a blurry mess of color and light. My ears buzzed, and I had trouble focusing on his face. My mouth felt dry, and I instinctively licked my lips. The words felt like a betrayal.
