The wind howled, a monstrous beast shaking the trees. Then came the sound, the monstrous crack, and everything went still. Thomas's breath caught in his throat.

His pulse accelerated, a frantic drumbeat against his eardrums. He felt a desperate urge to run, to escape the unseen danger lurking just beyond his door. His body was tense, rigid, poised to spring.

He willed himself to move, to go see what had happened, but his feet remained glued to the floor. The world outside the window seemed to hold its breath, waiting, watching. He finally decided to move.
