The voice on the phone sounded familiar, too familiar. It had been decades. He was sure he’d buried it all. “Hello?” she croaked into the receiver. The voice on the other end said a name. It was a name that had the power to unravel everything.

Her hand squeezed the phone, the plastic digging into her palm. Her heart pounded in her ears like a drum. The house around her seemed to tremble. Her carefully constructed life was about to be destroyed.

She felt a physical ache in her chest, a knot of fear that tightened with every word. She couldn’t breathe. The past had found her.
