The vibrant green leaves of the forest she had grown up near were replaced with an empty gap. She had been imagining how lovely it would look in the upcoming fall season. This wasn’t what she’d pictured.

Her legs felt like jelly. She sank to her knees, the damp earth cold against her skin. A low whimper escaped her lips. Everything was wrong.

She struggled to breathe, the air feeling thin and inadequate. Her hands clawed at the ground, as though she could somehow pull the tree back. The world blurred around the edges, everything fading into a distant, terrifying echo.
