Sarah gripped the chipped mug so hard her knuckles were white. The dean's words, a drone in the echoing hall, felt like ice forming in her stomach. "Due to unforeseen financial difficulties…" The words hung in the air, heavy and unyielding. She hadn't heard the rest; her ears were ringing. The lecture hall seemed to shrink, the faces of her classmates blurring into indistinct blobs. She felt a desperate urge to bolt, to escape the suffocating weight of the announcement. Her breath hitched.

Her carefully laid plans, meticulously crafted over years, were now crumbling like dry leaves in the wind. She saw her future – the good job, the apartment, the independent life – all dissolving before her very eyes. She imagined the phone call to her parents, the crushing disappointment she knew she would unleash.

Later, she found herself wandering the campus, the familiar paths now alien and hostile. The vibrant autumn colours, once so comforting, now seemed mocking, a cruel reminder of the life that was being snatched away. Each rustling leaf felt like a whisper of doom.
